It is natural to experience all kinds of emotions during this time; sadness, loneliness, anger, guilt, doubt, and/ or even relief. No emotion is off the table during a loss like this, and we encourage you to express any feeling that comes in a safe and healthy way. Our grief support will be here to remind you that you are not alone and will support you with the multitude of emotions that comes from finding a new normal without your loyal friend.

The role a pet plays in your life is so impactful and the absence of the loss can often feel overwhelming. While some people may not understand the depth of feeling you had for your pet, you should never feel guilty or ashamed about grieving for an animal family member.

The aspect of grieving for the loss of a pet is not always appreciated by everyone. Some friends and family assume that pet loss shouldn’t hurt as much as human loss, or that it is somehow inappropriate to grieve for an animal. They may not understand or appreciate the companionship and love that a pet can provide. We encourage you not to argue with others about whether your grief is appropriate or not. Remember we are all different and grieve in our own way. Accept the fact that the best support for your grief may come from outside your usual circle of friends and family members, and that is ok.
